Synopsis/劇情簡介
Winter, 2003. Thirteen-year-old Fen is forced to move to Taipei from Los Angeles when her mother is diagnosed with breast cancer. She finds it difficult to adapt to her new life and school while trying to reconnect with her father.
Meanwhile, her relationship with her mother becomes more turbulent, and Fen’s rebellious behaviour heightens the tensions between the two. Eventually, when her younger sister is misdiagnosed with SARS, Fen and her mother have a heated confrontation that has been brewing for a long time.
The film won five Golden Horse Awards, including Best New Performer, Best New Director, Best Cinematography, the Audience Choice Award, and the FIPRESCI Prize during the 58th Golden Horse Awards.
Director/導演介紹
Feng-I Fiona Roan received her Directing MFA degree from AFI and was previously trained in classical Chinese Literature at National Taiwan University.
Her debut feature, AMERICAN GIRL, was shortlisted in the 2021 Tokyo International Film Festival’s Asian Future section. The film won four Golden Horse Awards, including Best New Director for Fiona Roan Feng-i (the first woman to do so), the Audience Choice Award for Best Picture, and the FIPRESCI Prize during the 58th Golden Horse Awards.
AMERICAN GIRL also won Best Narrative Film at the 24th Taipei Film Festival, and Best Asian Chinese-Language Film at the 40th Hong Kong Film Award. The film is available on Netflix worldwide.
