2026 Melbourne Taiwan Film Festival: Transition

Hi everyone! Lí hó! Tai gaˊ hoˋ!

This year our film festival centres around a powerful theme “Transition.”

“Transition” is perhaps most visible in Taiwan’s historical and political journey from authoritarianism to democracy. Yet, for those living through it, change often feels quiet and subtle — triggered by a short conversation, a photograph, or a fleeting moment with family. Featuring four remarkable and deeply moving personal stories, these films bring Taiwan’s past and present into a shared conversation.

Four films. Four ways of living through transition.

Opening film – 21 May 6.30 pm | Family Matters 《我家的事》– A film that explores the complexities of family bonds and how resilience and love shape their lives.

22 May | Deep Quiet Room 《深度安靜》 – A gripping narrative of tension and discovery, as the protagonist Yu-Ming uncovers a devastating truth following a tragic loss of his wife Yi-Ting.

23 May 2.00 pm | The Photo From 1977 《那張照片裡的我們》– A transnational love story that highlights the courage of Taiwanese youth activists during the 1977 Zhongli protest, confronting personal dreams and political awakening.

Closing film – 23 May | A Foggy Tale 《大濛》 – A story that addresses the families of the victims during Taiwan’s White Terror, celebrating the brilliance of humanity seen in a ruthless era.

Stay tuned for more details.
