Presented by the Australasian Taiwan Studies Association and the Taiwanese Association of Australia Melbourne Chapter, Melbourne Taiwan Film Festival offers a unique opportunity for residents in Melbourne to view the movies made by Taiwan’s best filmmakers. The first Melbourne Taiwan Film Festival which took place at ACMI in May 2022 attracted more than 1,000 people, which shows the great potential of the event.
Melbourne Taiwan Film Festival in 2023 aims to enhance and broaden the general public’s understanding of Taiwan by presenting the selected films that focus on the shared values or topics of concern of both Australian and Taiwanese audiences, such as first nation, democracy, human rights, transitional justice, gender and environmental protection. Taiwanese directors of selected movies will be invited to the Q & A sessions after the films (online or in person), so as to provide audiences with the chance to communicate with the directors.
台灣電影自1980年代新電影浪潮以來即在國際上即享有盛名，尤其墨爾本又是澳洲文化藝術之都，每年均舉辦各國的電影展，特別是有具悠久歷史的墨爾本國際電影節（Melbourne International Film Festival, MIFF），然於2022年之前，都未舉辦過台灣電影節，在澳亞台灣研究協會的發起，並由澳洲動態影像中心（ACMI），墨爾本大學亞洲中心以及墨爾本台灣同鄉會的協助下，於2022年5月正式舉辦台灣電影節。
2022墨爾本台灣電影節除打破先例，更克服COVID-19所帶來的諸多挑戰，第一次將台灣電影節帶上澳洲官方場地ACMI，短短三天的活動中總共吸引了超過一千人次的觀眾，並有不少澳洲政要與會，像是澳洲友台小組議員、白馬市市長、日本墨爾本總領事皆親自出席。除澳洲本地的觀眾，更還有來自義大利、日本、新加坡、紐西蘭、英國、南非與德國等觀眾參與，利用軟實力達到深度外交之目的。
