Professor Chwei-Liang Chiou Memorial Special Panel Grant 紀念邱垂亮教授–專題論壇補助

Professor Chwei-Liang Chiou Memorial Special Panel Grant

紀念邱垂亮教授–專題論壇補助

Supported by the Macquarie University School of International Studies Taiwan Research Fund

This panel is proposed in memory of the late Professor Chiou Chwei-Liang (邱垂亮,1938-2021), one of the leading figures in the development of Taiwan Studies in Australasia. Throughout his career, Professor Chiou made major contributions to the study of Taiwan’s democratisation, overseas Taiwanese political movements, national identity, and comparative politics in East Asia. His scholarship connected these themes through a sustained interest in how democratic Taiwan emerged and how its ideas and institutions were shaped both within Taiwan and through overseas communities. This panel honours that intellectual legacy.

Thematic Focus

Panels addressing one or more of the following themes are invited:

1. Democracy — Taiwan’s democratic development, electoral politics, civil society, and democratic resilience.
2. Diaspora — Overseas Taiwanese communities and their historical and contemporary engagement with Taiwan.
3. Identity — Taiwanese identity in relation to Chineseness, Indigenous peoples, colonial legacies, and civic belonging.
4. Comparative Politics — Taiwan in comparative perspective, including democracy, authoritarianism, and regional security.

Panel Composition and Funding

The Macquarie University School of International Studies Taiwan Research Fund will provide AUD $3,000 to support participation in the Professor Chwei-Liang Chiou Memorial Special Panel.

The funded panel must include at least one doctoral researcher. Applications from Taiwanese doctoral students and students enrolled at universities in Taiwan are particularly encouraged, although the competition is open to scholars from across the Asia-Pacific working in political science, history, sociology, and interdisciplinary Taiwan Studies.

The purpose of the grant is to support emerging scholars while encouraging new research on democracy, diaspora, identity, and comparative politics in Taiwan Studies.

This panel will be part of the Global Taiwan Conference. Please submit your panel proposal and a brief bio of each presenter to globaltaiwanconference@gmail.com by 5 August 2026.
